After retreating from University life Newman went to live at "The College" in Littlemore. The village (which has now been engulfed by Oxford and is a 15 minute bus ride from the city centre) was dear to Newman's heart; he had done much in ministering to the villagers and had also built a church for them. It was here that he was received into the Church by the great Passionist missionary Bl. Dominic Barberi. The College is now run by the Sisters of the Work, who are always pleased to welcome visitors and to show them Newman's chapel, room, and library.

Devotion to Our Lady of Oxford spread in the latter part of the nineteenth century after Hartwell de la Garde Grissell (one of the Newman Society's founding members) brought the image of Our Lady "Mater Miserecordiae" from Rome. Grissell was a Papal Chamberlain to Bl. Pius IX and the Pope granted indulgences to the sacred image. Since 1908 the image has been enshrined in the Parish Church of St. Aloysius Gonzaga.

St. Frideswide is patroness of the University and City of Oxford. She was a Saxon princess who worked miracles of healing and founded a monastery on what is now the site of Christ Church. Her shrine can be found in Christ Church Cathedral and there is also a holy well associated with her at St. Margaret's Church in Binsey (a pleasant 25 minutes walk across Port Meadow).
For further details of St. Frideswide's legend see http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/06303b.htm
Oxford University numbers no less than thirteen saints and fifty-six blesseds among its alumni. The great majority of these were martyrs, who were sentenced to death for profession of their faith between 1535 and 1642. In addition to the martyrs, there are six medieval members of the University who have been formally canonised or beatified, or who have had their cults confirmed by Rome.
